Jon Macaskill’s Doorway Reset for Presence

Many of us spend our days racing from one commitment to the next. Even during life’s most meaningful moments, our minds can drift toward tomorrow’s meeting, next week’s project, or a conversation we wish had gone differently.

The challenge is not finding more time. It is being fully present in the time we already have.

Retired Navy SEAL Commander turned leadership and mindfulness coach Jon Macaskill shares a simple practice he calls the Doorway Reset. It takes one breath, and it can change how you arrive in the moments that matter.

What is the Doorway Reset?

Each time you walk through a doorway, pause for a single breath. Let go of whatever occupied your attention in the previous room and intentionally arrive in the next one.

Research on the “doorway effect” suggests that our brains naturally create mental boundaries when we move from one space to another. Rather than fighting that tendency, we can use it to our advantage.

A doorway becomes a cue: pause, reset, and choose where your attention goes next.

Use the transition to arrive fully

The Doorway Reset is simple enough to use throughout the day. The practice is not about clearing your mind perfectly. It is about noticing where your attention is and bringing it back to the moment in front of you.

Try it in everyday transitions:

  • Walking into a meeting? Reset.
  • Coming home from work? Reset.
  • Sitting down with family or friends? Reset.
  • Starting an important conversation? Reset.
  • Moving from one task to the next? Reset.

That single breath creates a small but meaningful pause between what just happened and what comes next.

Choose a word to carry with you

Some people choose one word to carry through the doorway. The word becomes an intention for how they want to show up in the next room.

It might be:

  • Present
  • Patient
  • Curious
  • Calm

There is no perfect word. Choose one that reflects the quality you want to bring to the people, work, or moment ahead.

Attention is a leadership practice

Leadership, parenting, and relationships rarely suffer from a lack of intelligence. More often, they suffer from a lack of attention.

The people who matter most do not necessarily need more from us. They need more of us.

For leaders, this can mean entering a meeting ready to listen instead of replaying the last one. For teams, it can mean creating a culture where people are more focused, thoughtful, and connected. For all of us, it can mean being available for the moments we might otherwise miss.

Bring more presence to your next event

Jon Macaskill brings his unique perspective as a retired Navy SEAL Commander and mindfulness coach to audiences seeking stronger leadership, resilience, and peak performance. His message helps people build practical habits that support focus and intentional action—especially when pressure is high.

Want to raise the level of attention in your next meeting or throughout the work cycle? Invite Jon Macaskill to help attendees explore the powerful concept of the Doorway Reset.

What is one small habit that helps you stay present?
