CANNABIS INDUSTRY PIONEER
Calkin’s storied legacy in the cannabis industry began in 1976 when he and fellow activists staged a “smoke in” in The Mall in Washington, DC , where so many other cultural revolutions have broken ground. It was that act of protest that sparked Calkin’s lifelong mission to bring cannabis away from black market trade and into a mainstream industry.
As one of the original members of the American Hemp Council in 1988 with Chris Conrad and Jack Herer, Calkin’s activism and entrepreneurial spirit led him to begin creating jobs in the medical marijuana industry. Also in 1988, he opened his own delivery service that is still operating today; Green Dot LA.
Since then, he has gone on to become the face of medical marijuana jobs. He founded the Cannabis Career Institute in 2009 and Cannabis State University in 2010. He has also written curriculums for Oakland’s Oaksterdam University, which was the basis for his 2008 cannabis entrepreneurship bible “Starting Your Own Medical Marijuana Delivery Service: The Mobile Caregiver’s Handbook.”
In 2011, Calkin created the industry’s leading job listing and business development resource Cannajobs.com, the most comprehensive online source for news and information relating to the medical marijuana industry.
“I have helped create and grow literally hundreds of medical marijuana businesses legally,” said Calkin. “I have the knowledge and skills required to do this and my goal is to spread to word to make as many businesses legitimate as possible.”
